Interview — Empowering Women in STEM

February 14, 2025

At ATS Ammunition, women play a crucial role in production, and Sara – the Head of Production, is a prime example. She has been with ATS for the past 4 years, transitioning from machine assembly to production coordination after completing a 3-month training (two months at ATS and one month at ATS Technologies). With a mechanical engineering background, she oversees the manufacturing process, ensuring everything works in a perfect order.

Local Roots & Family Ties

Sara hails from Samokov, a village 5 km from the factory. Her father and mother also work at ATS—her father for 4 years and her mother for almost 9 years. This strong family connection reflects ATS’s commitment to employing locals from the Porechje region, where most of their 300 employees come from.

Women Leading in Precision Engineering

A remarkable 80% of ATS employees are women, excelling in roles such as shift managers, quality control specialists, and machine operators. Sara believes women are naturally drawn to precision-based industries, making ammunition production an exciting and fitting career and welcomes other to join this transition. The high level of dedication and attention to detail make women invaluable in every position within ATS. Sara’s department is responsible for producing small-ammunition bullets, ensuring high-quality manufacturing and rigorous testing. Not long ago, on her initiative, the factory started offering separate product components: brass casing, bullet, and primer, and in the new strategic plan for this year, mortar and artillery production are next.

The Future of Women in Ammunition

Sara exemplifies how women are reshaping the industry, proving that skill, precision, and dedication define success in ammunition manufacturing. Under her leadership, ATS continues to set high standards, reinforcing the vital role women play in advancing this field.
